Two Notions of Well-formedness in the Organization of Musical Pitch
نویسنده
چکیده
The attribute "well-formed" is used homonymously in two different approaches to the study of musical tone relations. The present article explores commonalities and differences of the underlying theoretical ideas. Fred Lerdahl (2001) uses the attribute “wellformed” (in extension of the GTTM tradition) in order to formulate constraints for the constitution of the basic space as a context-sensitive stratification of the chromatic pitches into layers. Norman Carey and David Clampitt (1989) use the term in order to formulate a criterion to select music-theoretically relevant scales from the larger domain of generated scales. The appearance of pitch hierarchies is common to both approaches and thus provides a starting point for the discussion. There are two other theoretical aspects, which motivate the the comparison between the two approches: (a) the distinction between generic and specific intervals and (b) the duality between step interval patterns and fifth/fourth foldings in the theory of well-formed modes.

مطالعه درجات اصلی گام موسیقی ایرانی از روی طیف نتهای گام
In this paper we have extracted the notes of Iranian scale from the traditional music played by the great musician Shahnazi on the TAR. Then, by analyzing the spectrum of the notes and by using our special averaging we have found the pitch attributed to the components’ frequency and found the interval between the notes. The results are in comple agreement with Pythagorean scale. Pitch is a su...
متن کاملConvexity and the Well-formedness of Musical Objects
It is well known that subsets of the two-dimensional space ¢ 2 can represent prominent musical and music-theoretical objects such as scales, chords and chord vocabularies. It has been noted that the major and minor diatonic scale form convex subsets in this space. This triggers the question whether convexity is a more widespread concept in music. This article systematically investigates the con...

The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. متن کاملClassification of Iranian Traditional Music Dastgahs Using Features Based on Pitch Frequency
The Iranian traditional music is composed of seven majors Dastgahs: Chahargah, Homayoun, Mahour, Segah, Shour, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah. In this paper, a new algorithm for the classification of the Iranian traditional music Dastgahs based on pitch frequency is proposed. In this algorithm, the features of Lagrange coefficients of pitch logarithm (LCPL), Fuzzy similarity sets type 2 (FSST2), and th...

Background in music psychology and music computation. In Lerdahl and Jackendoff’s Generative Theory of Tonal Music (1983), the authors try to formalize cognitive processes seen in music, referring to Chomskyan (generative) linguistics. Among other processes found in musical cognition (such as harmonic tension and detecting rhythmic patterns), Lerdahl and Jackendoff describe the process of group...
